Starting a small business online is incredible rewarding and very tricky. I was going to say ‘tough’ but hopefully you had already factored that part in. Believe it or not, a lot of people don’t factor that in…They assume that all work taking place online must be as fast and as easy as doing a search online.

It’s not.

The best way of starting a small business online is to know exactly what your goal is. Having a mission statement and having a game plan written down is widely regarded as one of the best ways of getting started. Yet almost no one does it.

Almost no on takes the ten or twenty minutes needed to put pen to paper to write down what they hope to accomplish. That mission statement, as unnecessary as you might think it is, has been a key contributing factor to the success of many of the online greats.

My advice here is something I’ve become a bit of a broken record saying…But its important: don’t try to reinvent everything. You don’t have to start from scratch. There’s no need to.

By feeding off of the learning from others, myself included, you’ll be starting a small business online with all of our mistakes having been made. Why go through that when you don’t have to.

So my practical advice to you today is to write down your mission statement. Be as specific as you can. And have short term and long term goals on it. Accomplish your long term tasks every day before you start on the short term ones.

This advice is not new. I’m not a business sage.

I’m a listener.

I listen to what works and I do it. Took me a while to stop doing things my way…But eventually I relented. And you should too. Follow the path of people who are succeeding and you will succeed. Starting a small business online is doable. You just need to stay teachable.

Marketing 101 – “Must Haves” for Starting a Small Business Online

When considering starting a small business online you must do the proper research and implement the right tactics to ensure that you will have a successful product launch.

It is always best to ensure yourself that there is already a market for what you have to offer and that this target market is ready to buy now into whatever your services provide.

The first order of business is to come up with a product idea to test out in the market place. A carefully thought out product with a well researched niche will provide you an income fast to help you reach certain target goals.

You can begin your research into your target market by first utilizing simple tools like the Google Keyword Planner tool to see if there are people searching for a certain type of item, such as scuba diving gear, white water rafting gear, mountain biking gear, etc. The list can be endless and it is super important to narrow down your product ideas to niches that haven’t necessarily been tapped yet.

Now, the first step is really thinking of a product but the most important step that follows is actually testing out your product concept to see if anyone is willing to buy it on the spot. What you want to do next is perform “dry testing” which consists of placing a thoughtful ad in either Facebook, Google or eBay.

In the initial stages I prefer to choose eBay simply because it is easy to place a product concept ad as an auction item to see if there will be any real world bidders attempting to buy your product. However, if you are severely uncomfortable with the idea of “dry testing” you can also place on ad on Google or Facebook for the following idea:

See if you can build an email database of people interested in an ebook, or free course related to your product. For example, if you wanting to sell a dog sledding competition book and you want to see how many people would remotely be interested in it, you can set an ad campaign promoting a free ebook on your top 10 tips of doggy breeding success in the cold weather.

What this does is creates an interest to people already in dog training that may consider actually joining a system that teaches dog sledding, but again it comes down to careful research and idea testing.

With these two tactics you can easily be on your way to launching a small business that is specific to a certain niche, and build a confirmation that people are actually interested in what you have to offer. The essence of marketing and the essentials for long term success.
